Chastity and her mother have been on the run since she was a baby, assuming new identities in every town. She doesn't understand why they are running, or indeed, who her father is, or even her real name. On the night of her sixteenth birthday, Chastity’s mother disappears apparently without a trace. Police then manage to track down her abandoned car, matching her DNA, and a purse containing six ID cards. Chastity, not believing her mother is dead, goes on the run again.
If Chastity doesn't find her mother in six days, she'll be put into foster care - while being Chastity by people who want to kill her- still confused she carries on. Her mum had once given her a key to open a deposit box, she finds a CD, and plays it as a clue to the confusions of her mother’s murder. On the tape, Kyle Van Epps told Chastity's mum that he killed some girl he used to go out with and that he and 2 of his best friends were there on the crime scene.
She notices that the people that were Chasing her worked for Van Epps Company; Chastity's mum sends her a txt message saying that she was okay and that she will meet her at midnight in a bar. Her mum arrives with Van Epps and he told her to give him the tape or her mum will die. Chastity gave him the tape but he escapes. The story closes with Van Epps going to jail, her mum rescued. Van Epps always knew her mum got the tape so that’s why they were always on the run.
